Chinese IT MNC Huawei Replaces Windows with its own HarmonyOS on its Next PCs

Trumpeting a major shift in its computing policy, the Shenzhen head quarted Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Announced that its upcoming PCs will have the company’s own operating system HarmonyOS instead of the commonly used Microsoft Windows.

Mr Yu Chengdong, head of consumer business group confirmed this shift in a recent interview.

He pointed out that the existing batch of PCs would be the last ones to support Windows, as Huawei focuses on integrating its indigenous operating system into its hardware products.

HarmonyOS Next is the upcoming version that Huawei markets as an utterly standalone system with a new Linux-free kernel. What’s more, this new version will not run Android applications, making HarmonyOS a separate OS platform that Huawei hails as offering better performance and security.

Despite Huawei’s all-out effort, the effect upon Microsoft will be minimal.

Canalys analyst firm estimates that Huawei accounts for around ten percent of the China PC market, which amounts to about 40 million units every year. The market is dominated by Lenovo, having an estimated 38 percent share, followed by HP, accounting for ten percent. Despite this, Lenovo and HP have minimal motive to embrace Huawei’s OS, but the policies of a patriot state or the government change in preference towards local technology may change the dynamics in the future.

HarmonyOS is facing challenges from the software developers exclusively from the gaming sector; which might impact the adoption by the general consumers.
